#7210 The Neurologic Upper Extremity I: Preparations and Impairment

Treat the entire upper extremity kinematic chain; not just arm movement!  In the first part of this two-part course series, Dr. Steve Page integrates lecture, video, and case examples to discuss the upper extremity kinematic chain. Specific discussions include comprehensive evaluation and treatment of the core, posture, scapulae, and hemiplegic shoulder, and body/arm positioning, and their relative contributions to upper extremity motor performance and function. Dr. Page will integrate biomechanical assessment and clinical problem-solving skills to prioritize impairments and progress interventions. A mixture of demonstrations will be used to allow immediate incorporation into practice. These treatment ideas will include priority stretches, low/high tone, subluxation, pain, and functional activities. Note: This is the first course in a two-part series focusing on management and restoration of the paretic upper extremity.  Course instruction method includes: Lecture, Demonstration, Vides, Case Studies, Question/Answer, Group Discussion.

#7211 The Neurologic Upper Extremity II: A Multi-Level Approach to Restoration and Compensation

After nearly 20 years teaching some of the first stroke continuing education courses, Dr. Steve Page knows a thing or two about the upper extremity! In the second portion of this two-part series, Dr. Page discusses strategies to facilitate and optimize upper extremity movement following a neurological injury. Building on Part 1’s focus on mitigating impairment and readying the upper extremity for practice, this second course focuses on optimizing assessments and goals, the importance of practice, strategies to grade practice and drive learning, and task specific training in a variety of patient presentations. Augmentative strategies to enhance practice attempts (eg, modalities; orthotics) are also discussed. Uniquely, this course uses impairment/functional levels as a framework to present interventions and goals that might be applied to particular patients. Note: This is the second course in a two-part series focusing on management and restoration of the paretic upper extremity. Course instruction method includes: Lecture, Demonstration, Vides, Case Studies, Question/Answer, Group Discussion.
